About us

The Community Eye Health Journal is published by the International Centre for Eye Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London. It addresses the elimination of avoidable blindness and focuses on countries where the burden of preventable blindness is greatest. Guided by the Global Initiative for the Elimination of Avoidable Blindness by 2020 - VISION 2020: the Right to Sight, the journal prioritises three key areas:

  • disease control (with emphasis on VISION 2020 priority diseases such as cataract, childhood blindness, trachoma, refractive error and onchocerciasis)

  • human resource development

  • infrastructure and technology.

Articles combine clinical issues with public health approaches which include research, planning and management, appropriate technology, training, and advocacy. Attention is also paid to programmes for people who are blind or living with low vision.

The principal aim of the journal is educational, to ensure that up-to-date and relevant information reaches eye care workers of all levels (primary, secondary, and tertiary) in a reader-friendly format that can easily be adapted for training.

Readers include ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, ophthalmic assistants, general doctors, programme planners, administrators, and public health specialists. Read the Reader survey 2005 summary PDF (100Kb) to learn more about our readers and how they use the journal.

The journal is provided free to readers in low- and middle-income countries. Circulation is 17,000 and includes more than 170 countries.  The journal is also published online and on CD ROM. Selected articles are published in special French, Chinese, and Spanish editions. The Indian edition includes a four page supplement containing articles relevant to Indian readers. Including translations, the total number of readers comes to nearly 27,000.

All articles published in the journal are indexed in PubMed. The journal is also indexed by EBSCO Publishing, Excerpta Medica (Embase), Directory of Open Access Journal, Index Copernicus International and eGranary Digital Library.
