More investment in human resources may be needed for VISION 2020 aims to be achieved in sub-Saharan Africa

A survey of human resources and cataract surgeries in 21 Sub Saharan Africa countries has found that the eye health workforce is not growing fast enough to achieve global eye health targets in most countries by 2020.

Substantially more targeted investment in human resources for eye health may be needed for VISION 2020 aims to be achieved in sub-Saharan Africa. Countries seeking to make rapid progress to improve CSR could prioritise investment in training new cataract surgeons over ophthalmologists and improving surgical output efficiency.
