Book review. Eye care in the field: a manual for health professionals
This publication, written by Dr Jerry Vincent OD MPH in 1996 while Primary Eye Care Co-ordinator with the American Refugee Committee, was designed for use by health care workers along the Thailand-Burma border. It was intended to be a concise learning aid on some of the common eye problems found in this area. The manual’s management recommendations reflect situations where medical equipment, drugs and referral resources are extremely limited.
Any health professional working in similar circumstances will find Eye Care in the Field a useful and valuable resource. The 55 page manual is divided into 5 sections:
-
Examination
-
Common Eye Conditions
-
Pharmacology
-
Bibliography
-
Photographic Plates: Xerophthalmia, Trachoma, Cataract, Corneal Problems, Normal Fundus
In a well organised publication, Ploy Hamar’s line drawings of relevant practical procedures are clear and easy to follow. A limited number were printed but the publication may be reprinted depending upon comment and demand. We commend it to our readers.
